Ballet Competitions: Summary

Happy Republic Day!

Welcome to our final post of January! This week, we'll be concluding our quest: becoming more informed about ballet competitions.

First, a small quiz to test what you know about ballet competitions! You're welcome to check out our previous posts here and here if you need a quick recap.

Great job! Now that you've practiced what you've learnt previously, let's move on to this week's topic.

This week, we won't be giving you much information about ballet competitions, we'll mainly guide you on understanding whether ballet competitions are good for you or if it's best to avoid it. We'll also be giving our own opinions and experiences.

At the end of the day, however, it is your decision and it depends on why you do ballet.

If you're doing ballet as a fun way to express yourself, competitions may not be the best for you, because although they're great places to express yourself, they are also very stressful and as we explained in our previous post, they can lower your self-esteem and make you feel worse.

It's also not a good idea to participate in competitions if you're doing ballet as exercise and for fitness. There are benefits, like more rigour, but you may experience a lot of burn out and if practiced incorrectly, you could also sustain some injuries.

On the other hand, if you're doing ballet as a future career, ballet competitions are a must! They prepare you for your future ballet career and help you in refining yourself. You'll also get lots of exposure to wonderful ballerinas from across the world through such competitions and you may even get scholarships if you win!

Ballet competitions are also great if you're learning ballet to improve your confidence, stage presence and interpersonal skills because they teach you how to cope with difficult and stressful situations.

But above all, remember that ballet competitions work best for you in moderation. While it's important to be consistent, too many competitions in short span of time does more harm than good.

With all that said, here's our authors' takes on ballet competitions.

"According to me, ballet competitions are fantastic for improving your performance skills and getting the sort of exposure you need to build a good ballet career. But they also have a lot to improve!"

- Aanyaa Garatikar

"Ballet competitions are an integral part of an aspiring dancer's journey and definitely benefits all those who participate"

- Sneha Anand

To wrap up, ballet competitions can be a wonderful experience, but their value truly depends on your goals and approach. Whether you embrace them or choose to steer clear, remember to stay true to your reasons for doing ballet and enjoy the journey, because that's what matters most!
