Ballet Education Systems: The French Method

Hello Everyone!

Welcome to another month filled with captivating ballet insights!

This time, we’re continuing our exploration of ballet education systems from around the world. Today, we turn our attention to the refined and elegant French method, a cornerstone of classical ballet with a rich history and a profound influence on the art form.

The French method, also known as the Paris Opera Ballet School method, traces its origins back to the foundation of the Académie Royale de Danse in 1661 by King Louis XIV. As one of the oldest and most prestigious ballet training systems, it has played a pivotal role in shaping the aesthetics and techniques of ballet as we know it today.

What distinguishes the French method is its emphasis on clarity, precision, and the effortless elegance of movement. It focuses on clean lines, quick footwork, and a strong sense of musicality. The French method instills in dancers a refined quality of movement that is both graceful and poised, reflecting the method’s deep-rooted connection to French art and culture.

In terms of technique, the French method places significant importance on the smooth, continuous flow of movement, with a strong emphasis on balance and posture. Dancers are trained to execute steps with meticulous precision, all while maintaining a fluid and harmonious style. This method fosters a lightness in movement, often described as "epaulement," which refers to the positioning of the shoulders and head to create a polished and expressive upper body line.

The preservation of the French method is deeply intertwined with the Paris Opera Ballet School, one of the oldest ballet schools in the world. This institution remains a beacon of the French ballet tradition, continuing to train dancers in the timeless principles of the method. Through rigorous training and dedication to the art, the French method's legacy continues to inspire ballet dancers worldwide.
