Hello Everyone!
Welcome to our third post this month! Today, we’ll be discussing the connection between ballet and RED-S/D, which stands for Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport and Dance.
As we’ve covered in earlier posts, RED-S/D is a syndrome that many athletes and dancers, particularly ballerinas, experience. It typically occurs when there is a combination of low calorie intake and excessive exercise, resulting in a range of health issues and symptoms.
This is particularly evident in the ballet world, where dancers face intense pressure to maintain high energy levels while also conforming to a specific body image—often a slender figure, as is commonly emphasized by ballet schools. This societal expectation contributes to a high prevalence of RED-S/D in the industry.
In ballet, a lean body is often seen as more graceful and better suited for performance than a fuller physique. As a result, many dancers may engage in unhealthy practices, such as restrictive dieting or purging, to achieve this ideal look. This mindset can start at a young age, leading dancers to believe that fitting a certain mold is essential for success, even though it’s not true. Unfortunately, this belief can lead to significant health concerns.Furthermore, ballerinas may unintentionally deplete their energy through rigorous training and practice without adequately replenishing their calorie intake. This imbalance can heighten the risk of developing RED-S/D, which can have serious implications for their health and careers, particularly for women and adolescent girls.
This emphasizes the importance for ballerinas and athletes in other aesthetic sports to prioritize not just training and practice but also a balanced diet. Regular health check-ups and being mindful of signs of this debilitating syndrome are crucial for safeguarding their well-being.In conclusion, it's essential to foster a supportive environment that encourages dancers to value their health over societal pressures. By promoting awareness of RED-S/D and advocating for healthier practices, we can help ensure that dancers can pursue their passions without compromising their physical and mental well-being.
