Ballet and Health: Physical

Welcome to our second post this month! This week, we’re diving into how ballet affects physical health, exploring its incredible benefits and potential challenges.

Ballet is a full-body workout that requires the use of every muscle, from stretching the arms in the second position to pointing the toes during a sauté. Among 61 common sports, ballet ranks as the second most physically demanding—just behind American football!

A 2008 study by Professor Tim Watson and Dr. Andrew Garrett from the University of Hertfordshire compared Royal Ballet dancers with elite British swimmers. Astonishingly, the dancers outperformed the swimmers in seven out of ten fitness categories.

Ballet enhances endurance, agility, flexibility, and stamina—key components of a healthy body. Its rigorous nature also promotes weight loss, muscle tone, and strength while reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease and managing stress.

For young children, ballet fosters strong bone and muscle development through constant stretching and movement, minimizing the risk of injuries. It also improves posture and immunity, as dancers maintain proper alignment in every performance and class.

While ballet is excellent for the body, it carries risks when practiced incorrectly. Overuse, poor posture, restrictive diets, and unhealthy body weight can lead to injuries.

Some common ballet injuries include:

  • Hip injuries
  • Foot and ankle injuries
  • Knee injuries
  • Stress fractures
  • Sprains
  • Ligament tears
  • Overuse injuries

The good news? Most ballet injuries are preventable! Here’s how:

  • Eat a balanced diet and stay hydrated.
  • Get adequate rest and avoid overtraining.
  • Exercise outside class to build strength and endurance.
  • Wear proper shoes and attire.
  • Always warm up before and cool down after classes or performances.

Ballet truly is an incredible way to stay fit! Its ability to strengthen the body, boost fitness, and improve overall health is unmatched. But, like any physical activity, staying mindful of potential challenges and prioritizing safety is key to enjoying its benefits for years to come.
